Bitter sweet Box mania

In Bits & pieces on November 18, 2005 at 9:28 am

According to Wikipedia Boxes are highly variable receptacles. When no shape is described, a typical cuboid box may be expected. Nevertheless, a box may have a horizontal cross-section that is square, elongated, round or oval; sloped or domed top surfaces, or non-vertical sides. A box normally may be opened by raising, sliding or removing the lid, which may be hinged and/or fastened by a catch, hasp, or lock. Whatever its shape or purpose or the material of which it is fashioned, it is the direct descendant of the chest, one of the most ancient articles of domestic furniture. Its uses are innumerable, and the name, preceded by a qualifying adjective, has been given to many objects of artistic or antiquarian interest.

I googled the word “Box” the other day in an attempt to explore boxes other than mine. I came up with an impressive number of boxes. I can’t say I liked them all, naturally, but some were appealing. Today I will feature a link to the Photo Box, which presents some of the most dazzling pictures I have ever seen.

You ought to see for yourself to feel the beauty. I highly recommend a visit to the Photo Box.

  1. Talking about Box’s in the abstract ,you may like to check this link :

Franklin compt.dictionary list boxes as evergreen shrub !! I did not know that before you enticed me to look for box as a container to hold things ,not as a frame to enclose script in a publication ,live and learn .
But do check the above link please

  2. Ahhh, anonymous person, you beat me to Prometheus Bound. I will post about the myth because I read the play some two days ago, and I found it absolutely beautiful.

A note on the side, did you know that Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is also called “The modern Prometheus”?. Lovely analogy.

  3. Toly ,
Mary Shelley subtitled her novel “The Modern Prometheus.” According to the Greeks, Prometheus with details of horror which I don’t wish to detail since you are planning to post soon. Similarly, Mary Shelley’s arrogant scientist, Victor Frankenstein, claimed “benevolent intentions, and the author eagerness for the present to put them in practice.” Frankenstein character bear infamous horrors, yet known for the richness of the ideas it asks us to confront social alienation, and forces us to deal with the nature of life itself.

On the side ,Toly I want to share something totally to the contrary of the subject ,yet it is another Frankenstein Melton’s Paradise Lost, which profoundly stirs a monster emotions. The monster compares his situation to that of Adam, Frankenstein’s creature is hideously formed. And abandoned ,the monster finds himself “wretched, helpless, and alone.” And he recites:
Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay,.
To mould me man? Did I solicit thee,.
    From darkness to promote me?
Lines t a quote fromfrom John Milton’s Paradise Lost
    The Modern Prometheuse, 1818
Toly did you know this other Frankenstine ?

  4. anonymous person, I admit I still have not read Paradise Lost, and that is probably one of the things that nag at me and make me feel quite uneducated. I have been planning to read the masterpiece for so long now that I forget when this desire was born.

Putting that aside, and yet in mind, I thank you for bringing that bit to my attention. I certainly did not know of it, and now it remains for me to discover once I actually read Milton’s work.

  5. lol,, I like the funbox in my mobile…
