Arabic Entry:

Somehow her good intentions were lost amidst this racist local stereotype!

Tololy, keeping in mind that “baida” is considered “7elwe” no matter what, I think she meant that Jordanians are dark skinned, unless she’s kind of racist and she really meant that Jordanians are not pretty.
Anyway, I hope you do not get upset because of her rude remarks.

?? ???,
My friend probably meant that as a compliment. The interesting bit about it is associating dark skin and “ugliness” with people of Jordanian origins. She even went so far as to point out a random girl sitting afar and to tell me she thinks she is Jordanian because she is not dressed “trendy-style” and has dark skin.

heh it happens, I’m from aqaba ’so enti shamalat! bel nesbeh eli’ but I have green eyes and bronze skin, and people never believed I’m Jordanian or from Aqaba.
Even if I ignore the fact that my mom is Caucasian, most people from aqaba I know doesn’t have dark skin
I’m not sure why black must always be Ghorani, and white has to be ‘abu sharkas’

I’m an “arab-48″, ie, an arab/palestinian living within “israel” and the situation is quite the opposite here. Arabs here usually have a dark complexion with dark eyes and dark hair and I’ve had these kind of comments/”compliments”many times because I don’t have the typical arabic look. Just yesterday I was talking in arabic with my blonde blue-eyed sister and an israeli woman walks up to tell us that she’s shocked that we’re arabs.
I used to work in a clothes store at the mall and was helping this guy who was curious about my “argentinian” accent. I pointed that it was arabic and he called me a liar. Claiming that I couldn’t possibly be an arab who was “bedah and hilweh”. I wasn’t flattered by this comment, to say the least and he didn’t believe me until I showed him my ID with my very arabic name.
