Welcome to the real world

In Bits & pieces, Personal on January 21, 2006 at 10:26 am

This is, partially, why I have problems understanding reality.

Sister: How was your first day?
Tololy: I didn’t enjoy it that much.
Sister: Why not?
Tololy: I dunno. I guess I’m not cut out for this kinda thing. I don’t like being confined, and I would rather sit and read somewhere else instead, you know.
Sister: But you won’t get paid for sitting and reading.
Tololy: But that’s what I wanna do. I want to get paid for reading or writing, or maybe studying.
Sister: So you didn’t enjoy the job today?
Tololy: It’s just that I remain seated in the same place, n people talk about other people, n I finish work n just pretend I’m working for what’s left of the day, n I dunno… It’s pointless!
Sister: Welcome to the real world!

  1. Welcome to the real world indeed ;-)

Every body has his/her “Why am I doing this?” day at work, it’s just too bad that for you it was your first!

In one of his speeches, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, addressed Stanford graduates by saying: “The past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”
This is something that I live by, and it could help. You just need to give your new job some time, and then look in the mirror and listen to your heart.

You might be interested in reading the full speech; you can get it at:

    Wish you a gr8 career.

  2. ufff!!fatta7ti jroo7i..i really love my job but sometimes life gets too complicated I just wish i was only a stay at home mom..enjoying my kids..but I know I would never do that…

  3. true this is a sad mad bad world. u wonder about the pointlessness of it all, till …..GOD …… comes into the scene. u really find. what steve says to be proufoundly true. as for me it is god. for some others it can be something else but as far as we r able to see a light at the end of the tunnel it is good enough.SO CHEER UP AND HAVE FUN.THIS TOO SHALL COME TO PASS.

  4. The standard case is that you only get paid for doing things that you don’t like.
Once you like your job, you will start not to care for how much you get paid, and in a while you will find yourself almost volunteering in whatever you are doing,

But there is a bright side in this fact too, once you quite the job you hate, you wont regret quitting it :D

  5. I wish I can take a break during the day
    lucky you

  6. Welcome to the Jobs world, actually, Welcome to the rest of your life world, for me if I don’t have bills to pay, food to eat, I’ve quitted my job a long time ago, actually now I would be reading a book, or playing some music, instead of setting infront of a computer, testing some stupid system …
I really wish that I could get back to those university days …

  7. You reminded me of my interniship. The final conclusion i came down to is: i think ill dislike my job:(

The whole concpet of you not being the boss of your work is somehow annoying. But I guess it should be the challenge for you to built yourself up…

  8. You can actually get paid for being a student, especially a graduate student in America or Canada. The pay is shit and you are treated like crap by your professors, undergraduate students, administration, etc., but at least you would be reading books you love and getting another degree in a field you are passionate about.

    Just a thought.

    Dana

  9. my advice: decide what you like to do with your caree and change your job. lots of people in the world actually like their work very much. wasting ones life in a job we don’t like is a crime. Of course every job has its highs and lows. It’s not like ‘wow’ everyday. But if there is now wow at all this is the sign of trouble.

Don’t listen to anyone telling you the ‘real world’ is supposed to be boring or mindless. Often this is just something people hide their own inaction behind.

  10. This conversation I posted took place several months ago, I intended to mock “the real world” by publishing it (quite am ambition, won’t you agree?).

Hello Dana, and welcome to Tololy’s Box. Do pardon me if I welcomed your before, my memory often fails me.

A nice and warm welcome message also goes out to Hani, Husam and Ala’a Ibrahim.

  11. hmmm, so how is it going so far? did you adopt to your job?

  12. Sk8erboi,

I did, to some extent. Yet it is not entirely what I would want to be doing, therefore I am always on the look-out for a chance to thrive.

  13. Good luck, and you never know when a chance might come in your way

P.S. I’ve just noticed that I said “adopt” instead of “adapt”, silly me ;-)
