A day in Damascus I
Since a promise remains dead until you enact it, I am sharing some of the pictures I took during my very brief visit to Syria this past Saturday, March 11th. I would be glad if they find your liking.
The first two pictures are what could be seen through the window next to my seat in the bus. For those who don’t know this, it usually takes up to four or five hours to get to Damascus from Amman. In some occasions the trip takes a bit longer due to border paper work and such, Jordanians do not need a visa to visit Syria, which is why so many of them go there very often. In this trip I only went to Damascus, the city itself. The pictures are in no particular order.
This is the door of a very famous and old ice cream shop in the traditional Souk Al-Hamedeyye (Souk means market). This place is well-deserving of its reputation, I simply love the Arabic ice cream they make at “Bikdash”. This is a picture of my share, yum yum!
Then a view of an angel of this long tunnel-like Souk, it is a living gala, always bustling with life. And a gold shop’s window, very similar to what we have in Jordan.
The entrance of the Souk and another look into its depths.

I think this building in the next image is a court of some sort, I am not sure though. My personal favorite picture is the ultimate one, a simple shop selling all things China-made captured from above, near Baramkeh station.

Hello Salam :) The borders were fine, since it was a Saturday and so there wasn’t much of a crowd. But they have new security measures on the Jordanian side, those took some time.

Thanks for posting these pictures! I find it so fascinating to be able to see and hear about “daily life” in places that I have heard so much about that I may never have an opportunity to visit. It’s what attracted me to your blog in the first place, as I haven’t yet managed to visit Amman, though I’d really like to.

Wonderful pictures Tololy, glad you had a nice time there. I haven’t been yet, but I will try my best this summer when I go to Jordan. Every year I tell myself that I will go, but I usually get discouraged by family members who say it’s too hot in the summer…I don’t care, I’ll fight the heat, I want to see Damascus :)

She, the reason you cited is one of the reasons why I enjoy reading multi-cultural blogs. They are so enriching and so real, glad you enjoyed the pictures - more to come tomorrow inshallah.
Abu 7amarneh, Bab Tuma is an interesting place. Personally I enjoy old sites better and I like the food in Damscus, too. Allah ysallmak kollak zou2.
Hareega, I don’t know actually. This time I sat in the main hall and not in the upper ones, I think they have that picture in another floor. The place was so crowded I was lucky to land me a chair, anywhere!
Moi, oh do your very best to go to Syria. You never know what fresh complications might come up, and you should take advantage of the chance while you have it available. Perhaps we could meet up this summer if you come to Jordan for real, that would be quite interesting!

the best things I can remember when I was there before 6 moths my best Juice till now ; Mulberry Juice and Pomegranate Juice -39eer eltoot elshamy el2swad & 39eer el romman- , if u go there n summer u had to taste the “el3enab elshamy ” as a Juice or as it .
they have a good meals such as fatteh -more than 25 types-, tes2yeh ..etc , they have “baraze2″ also as sweets
I wont talk about nice places in Damascus coz there is alot, the picture of King Abdullah is still there , its in the ground floor … if u want to taste the best bekdash ice-cream u had to go to backdoor and get it directly by ur hand not from main service area in ground floor where is crowd r waiting, that will be more delicious.
I think Damascus is better to visit in summer , so you can go summer resorts , its too cold now
thx for posting this subject it was good memories there
