Metablog: Blog directory
It often happens that a blog author gets invited to join a blog directory, or a portal leading to specific blogs, and this is somewhat a win-win scenario since both the blog author and the directory would benefit from the probable exchage of traffic, should the author consent to linking back to that website.
But that’s not always the case.
Since odd things tend to occur in cyberspace, a blog author might also receive fishy invitations that could, as an example, ask for a phone number or detailed and obviously unncessary data in return for linking to the blog. I have received such an invitation and, to tell no lies, I was uneasy about sharing my information with an anonymous body that, despite having a website, also put me under an obligation to respond in 48 hours.
Anonymity has been a big issue in the blogging world, and it will probably always pose the same questions and theories, the same arguments and counter-arguments. But in the case of an invitation, from an unfamiliar body, requesting critical information like a phone number, a blog author ought to be cautious.

I think he doesnt have any rights to ask for a specific details, whatever he is, if he wants any details for his directory I guess name, Blog`s links, and may be a small logo and acceptance of Blog`s owner is enough
more, the Blogging world must not have any Anonymity or it will not be a real “Web Log”

I recieved the same one a couple of days ago also. And the questions were just too personal for me!
What organization you work for? and what is your mission? Phone number!?
I checked their website (I’m sure you also did) and most of them turned out to be Israelies, others jews. One of them was even part of the army.
I also wanted to blog about them, but then again I thought it will get them traffic and I wont give them that honour.

I received the same email, and decided to reply. Didn’t give them my phone number though, and was cautious with my answers. One of their contributors was actually my brother’s summer camp counselor many years ago, and some of the other names are familiar to me as well from the Israeli media. I can totally understand why non-Jews and non-Israelis would be suspicious of them. I guess we’ll see what happens now…

I believe the oddest bits about the whole affair was their asking for a phone number from a person who blogs under a pseudonym, and the 48 hour time limit. I couldn’t digest the two demands.

It depends on how desperate a blogger is to get linked. Some are so desperate they may not think in such situations.

As long as you are online, then you will have people trying to get some of your personal information. Sometimes they ask for it, but sometimes they steal it, just be thankful that it wasn’t the latter ;-)
