The early bird gets the worm

In Opinion on April 6, 2006 at 12:31 am

A popular saying goes “ The early bird gets the worm”, and is used mainly during morning hour sales and such, and trusted as a bible by most employers.

The wisdom behind having to arouse all your employees at approximately 7 AM, when you do not own a stock market of some sort and when you do not have affairs to conclude in areas differing with yours in time, alludes me.

One can hardly think of ways in which an employee still struggling with removing himself from his dreams can function well and produce in the benefit of the job. Certainly this is not to negate one of life’s humblest facts; that there are indeed people who perform well in the morning. But it is also not to neglect another fact that giving people an extra 30 minutes of slumber may boost their productivity to the delight of their managers.

There is no lazier an image than that of a half-sleeping worker exerting obvious effort to concentrate on getting his first task done. No worms, none for the worker, and none for the company.

  1. Intersting post!

Actually I can’t recall which university was it, but they have decided to start classes about half an hour later in the day, because of this problem!
Actually sleeping deprivation is becoming epidemic, especially among teenagers and college students.
7am?I think this is too early!(of course it depends on the job)

  2. I am a morning person myself, but I would much rather enjoy that first hour of the morning without the rush and hassle of having to be at work at 8 sharp… I would like to get some extra hour to enjoy a hearty big breakfast, or run for 30 minutes, or read something inspiring, or solve a sudoku… I don’t want to wake up at 5:30 to do that, I want to wake up at 7:00 and still have all the time!! Am I making any sense?? Probably not, but I better get back to work, and enjoy my cup of herbs while wasting the first hour of company time reading newspapers and blogs ;)

  3. I believe it’s just a matter of getting used to waking up a bit earlier ..early is a relative term, one needs to give himself that extra half hour in the morning for bumming around, given that ,it doesn’t matter wether you start your day at five in the morning or ten.

  4. I hate being up early in the morning! To go to work at least. Believe it or not, I’ve set up 7 alarms just to be sure that am up by 7 am, though I would love to wake up earlier to have breakfast.

  5. Affirmative
Nothing and I mean NOTHING beats the first hour in the morning to do those tiny things that we neglect; like exercising, having breakfast, breathing some fresh air, seeing a friendly face of your family members before officially launching the painful long tiresome boring day!!
