Shopping for nose jewelry
So much pain and pleasure come from experience, and I have decided to share my personal experience with shopping for nose jewelry with my readership. This may not interest many people, but it could help some others make better choices while trying to find the right sparkling object to adorn their nostrils.
Generally speaking, nose bones or nose studs are the commonest. They are probably the only variety we have here in Jordan, which is an upsetting fact. But putting that aside, when shopping for a nose stud, make sure the bar is straight and make sure to know what length you are looking for. If you do not know this exactly, take a sample with you (Your old nose stud, for example). In addition to that, do check if the stud has a small ball at the end of the bar. This ball is very important; it keeps your jewelry from falling right out of your nostril every time you sneeze. But be careful, you dont want it to be so big so as to cause some real pain when you insert or remove the jewelry. Trust me on this one. I recommend this type if youd just gotten your piercing, its easy to maneuver.
Do not, ever, buy cheap nose jewelry. By cheap I mean jewelry made of God-knows-what metals. Always stick to gold (yellow or white), platinum, silver, or titanium. These metals are the safest; they would not cause you any infections or problems. Remember: you are not rich enough to afford cheap things.
There are also nose screws, which have a straight bar right after the gem and then a curve. Those can be adjusted to fit properly, but they generally come in standard form. I once got some of these and couldnt really work them so I returned the set to the shop and got a better deal.
The current jewelry I wear is very practical. It is a nose fishtail with a longish bar, and no ball at the end. The way to insert this is a bit tricky and similar to nose screws, you twist the bar into the shape you want ( the shape of the letter L ) and bear in mind the proportions of your nostril. It takes some practice but when it works, it works magic and you dont feel it. I would recommend this type to more experienced individuals.
And, of course, there are nose rings. The splendid thin, round metals come with a bead or a ball at one end so you would be able to close them. My personal favorite type, but I havent as yet found what I am looking for. You should check the gauge of the ring before buying it; theres no use buying a ring that is too thick to move freely or one too slim.

my god! That’s way too much trouble for my liking,If I were to wear a nose ring I’d get a magnetic one, though I don’t know how strongly can they hold on during a sneeze.

I got goosebumps just looking at those! sorry

Salam,
It just sounds like it’s too much trouble. It really isn’t, once you find the perfect accessory that fits your needs. It took me quite some time to find mine, I almost tried everything. Fake magnetic nose rings could work out well if you’re not very active, and they are temporary. My sister used to wear them, I wore them too for a short time (a week or so), so my family won’t be very shocked when I went ahead and got pierced without consent. This type doesn’t hold on properly, you will need to always make sure it’s in place. Hope I was of help!
Ohoud,
Don’t worry, I know my cup of tea is not everyone else’s.

Well … I cannot indulge myself with this luxury Tololy because I will hurt my nose from the first few minutes … LOL
I am highly allergic and sneezing most of the time .. so I believe that I will tear my nose almost immediately …
Just a question; how long have you been wearing a nose ring?

Khalidah, almost two years and I love it more every day :) How romantic, I know!

I’ve always wanted to get my eyebrow pierced…but I think my family would disown me and my job would probably fire me. Maybe I will get it done just for a day or two. No way!
I once saw a reality show where one of the people their eyebrow done. They were almost in tears. A grown tough man, at that. Did it hurt when you got it done? And they allow you to return nose jewelry? Gross. :-)

Khalidah, It was January ,7th, 2005. I had to doublecheck.
Luai, I adore eyebrow rings. They’re very nice on (some) people. Pain tolerance is relative, some people can take it more than others, some get petrified at the sight of a needle, it’s psychological I guess. The operation didn’t hurt, it was more of a shock than real pain. But after the local anesthetic died on me there were these waves of pain coming right from the new accessory, they weren’t pleasant but I was more worried about what my parents would say than to actually bother with the pangs of pain.
Claire’s took the nose screws back, no questions asked. I wasn’t so sure they would, but I tried and it worked. I’m a happy customer!

I’m wearing the same nose stud for 6 years now! The most important thing is to have it real gold (white or yellow) doesn’t really matter, but it should never be fake! Fake ones causes infections and pain.
A diamond ring would make it even nicer :)

Hello Dima, welcome to Tololy’s Box! 6 years is an amazing period of time, I salute you. I am planning on getting a diamond nose stud but the problem is that I’d have to buy it online, and I am considering the possibilities of its not working out well and my not being able to return it (probably). Any suggestions on where to get a real diamond nose stud in Jordan?

I agree with Dima on the diamond nose stud idea. Unfortunately I can’t help you out in where to get one in Amman…
I like nose rings a lot, though I don’t have one. I do have a naval/belly button piercing which I got 13 years ago at Uni. Not as many people had them back then. Now it seems that everyone does.
Hope you find the perfect nose ring!
Cheers,
Beti

Why do you have to buy it online? I got mine from Kazbar, know it? it’s a jewlery place here near fifth circle! it’s lovely, as i told you i’ve been wearing the same nose stud for 6 years! Although i get bored from things quickly, i tried to change it by trying out new ones but nothing was as good. Mine has a short straight bar (which is in my opinion better than the long ones and the funny thing it never falls down, im still wondering how)!! :) and it has a sparkling diamond at the end. Ask them for nose studs because they have a collection. Im facing a problem with finding nice belly rings though!? I have more than 10, i’ve collected them from Amman, the states and Germany. But again ive been wearing one for so long- i got it as a gift from Turkey! Any ideas?

Dima, the information you just provided me with is priceless! Thank you ever so much for that, I appreciate it. I have seen belly banana bells all around town in regular accessory shops, but they are fake/cheap and I would not dare recommend them to anyone. You could always buy them online, painfulpleasures.com have a nice collection and I think buying belly rings online is easier since you know the gauge perfectly well so you should face no problems. Say, did you get that piercing done in Jordan? Although I doubt it, I have to ask.

yup, it was done in Jordan 4 years ago, in top fashion i’m sure u know it! i like it a lot, it’s not painful but it gets infected easily! i faced many problems with my belly piercing, went to hospital to make sure that it’s ok as i had weird green liquid coming out :S it was disgusting in the beginning, but now i don’t even feel that it exists, and nose piercing hurts more! if you’re thinking about belly piercing go for it, just pay extra attention after you’re done to clean it with alcohol on regular basis…

Thank you for the useful information. We often get customers in our store asking about tatoos and piercings but we don’t have any experience in that area We sell more of the traditional religious jewelry so we’ll be sure to refer them to your site for more info. Thanks again and good luck.
