What, then, do you regard as a suitable alternative to democracy?

Ask Ghaddafi to define it:

(Demo = people in Arabic,

Cracy = from 'karasi' - chairs.

It simply means the people on the (ruling) chair, lol.

Democracy is fraught with problems (tyranny of the majority, energy dissipation of society, lack of complete information leading to irrational decisions, assumption of rationality, practically unfeasible in today's numbers...etc).

What to do? Strike a balance and accept 'representative' democracy as in the USA. That is closer to Oligarcy than it is to democracy - the Senators and Representatives are now a clique/gang.

Read Plato (The Republic) on why he thinks Democracy is a bad idea.

Black cats, Freedom and democracy are two different things. They're not the same

What you're describing is freedom, and not democracy

Democracy in essence is that the govern get to select who represent and govern them. It is a messy, slow, complicated, imperfect process.

Despite it's imperfections, it is superior to other forms of government in that it is the only one that acknowledges the primacy of the governed. Other forms of government invariably regard ordinary people as subjects rather than citizens. And, I think, there is a certain vitality that cannot be released until people have a sense of ownership over their government. A former president of Harvard once observed that no one has ever washed a rented car. He meant this as a metaphor for dictactorial governments. If people believe that rent rather than own their governments, the best energies a society has to offer will never be directed toward the common good.

Democrasy is the implementation of positive utilitarianism theories into practice (<u>Utilitarianism:</u> belief that usefulness is the basis of virtue and that decisions should be made
according to what will be good for the greatest number of people)
Ideally, democracy should not be based on representatives but rather polls for all people so as to represent real reflection of the Majority will...
I love Thomas Jefferson's (a former US president) quote: "A democracy is nothing more than an angry mob rule, where fifty-one percent
of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
Personally, I discredit democracy as it can justify heinous crimes like rape, murder, racism and virtually anything as long as there are quantitatively more people support such crimes!!

Real, full democracy. Doesn't exist anywhere. In it's purist
form it expects that people are 100% good and there is no evil. It's also based
on the primes that everyone will be doing what's best for the society and not
personal interests which is totally against human nature.
Another reason why pure democracy doesn't work is the sheer amount of bureaucracy
that it entails. Everything needs everyone's agreement and has to go all the
way to the top to get approved. It just doesn't work like this.
That's why there are, sort of democracies, but no real one exists or ever
existed or will ever exist
