Office Youth
As I was lost in thought today in the office, for my headache was somewhat severe, I realized that I am the youngest person around. Do not mistake my colleagues for being old, they are mostly young people. I just happen to be the youngest.
To divert my attention from my throbbing head, I gave the matter more thought. It was then that I realized that I have always been the youngest person in every work environment that employed me. I also remembered always being mistaken for being older than I really am, it must be another common spelling mistake.
Fascinating, isn’t it? At least I think it is. Truly fascinating – but fascinating things are short-lived. In the near future there will be younger people around, with their inexplicable jargon and fresh perspectives on life and ethics – oh how the same they all are!
Hah!

Tololy,

I have been in the exact same situation for a long while and I am unhappy to tell you that it works to your disadvantage on the long run.

Currently I go to meetings of my peers (position wise) and at this level they are mostly people with grey hair and children your age.

And though I do have a grey hair (yes, one so far), I am by no means a match for the majority of people in similar positions as mine or at least the people I have to work with on daily basis.

The higher you go the more politics you have to deal with. And as a result age takes precedence of actual experience. Which is frustrating.

Getting-in young and climbing up the ladder quickly may not be a very good thing.
Wow Sari, I hadn’t thought of it that way… Hmm… Thanks for the insight. But of course, to add to what you said, I am a young "woman" which certainly gives the situation a little more complexity/depth. Thanks again!

…and then one day, when you didn’t see it coming, you realize you are being interviewed for a job by someone younger. :(

Over here in the United States, we’re actually starting to notice a Web 2.0 generation gap in the workforce. There are those who are roughly over 35 who are traditionally trained businesspeople, marketing people, PR people, etc. - basically very conservative and cautious about business networking and communications.

Then there are those roughly younger than 35 who embrace social media, blogging, podcasting, MySpace-type networking, etc. who feel more comfortable just being real, being people to each other.

It’s changing the dynamic in how people start up companies, network, work and progress in their careers. It’s refreshing! :)

Let me know if you’re seeing this differently or if you’re noticing some of the same things. I’m curious if this is just us weird Americans experiencing it :) or if the rest of the world is seeing similar patterns.
