Camels in the City

In Bits & pieces on April 2, 2008 at 1:00 am

I took this picture four days ago. There is a group of about 20 camels of all sizes and colors innocently grazing in a patch of land not far from where I live. Every afternoon, cars stop by and let hordes of kids out to look at the camels. The camels have three men watching them, they set up little tents and water tanks on that patch of land.

The whole deal is very bizarre. I always feel strange when I see sheep crossing a street in Amman, although that is an increasingly rare sight. You can imagine how I feel about camels living in the vicinity of a heavily residential area. How did they even get here? It’s just not right.

  1. where is this?

  2. You have to remember that we are the intruders and destroyers of their environment ,Camels have been here for millions of years before human man kind ever existed on this face of this earth remember ,we are the intruders and destroyers to their natural rights that camels claimed for millions of years.

  3. <a href = “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel”>The origins of camel</a>

  4. I love how environmentalists somehow forget that humans are animals too!! It seems that environmentalists love all of “God’s creatures” except the humans… We too are part of the environment, u know!

  5. Whatever you might feel about the camels, Tololy, it’s a remarkable picture.

  6. Coincidentally, I noticed the sfaeway (7th circle) has a section dedicated to camel meat now. Could be related!

  7. Devil’s mind, the difference is we are able to think, and consider what we do, wheras the other animals act on instinct most of the time.

  8. Tololy, I was thinking “Mmmm … free food” until you said three men were watching. Look at the little one .. mmm …

Good shot by the way (you may want to hold the camera straight to get a level shot) :)

Hani, you should read more research on animal behavior (also watch Planet Earth). Animals are capable of doing coordinated covert and attack operations and use tools. Both of these go above and beyond mere instinct.
What makes us different from animals is the ability to use a keyboard. :P
No really, what makes different is our ability to reflect. We think about our thought process. In a way, philosophy sets us apart.

  9. I think it is SO cool!!

  10. I am going to use this picture as proof for all the stories I make up about camels in Jordan (the camel I got for my graduation, the white one i rode on my wedding day, the parked camels behind the houses…etc.)

  12. interestingly, when you eat Camel’s meat you lose your Wudu’! hehe

  15. [...] Remember the camels? They are still around. Only now, they actually roam the streets surrounding where they graze and they some times defy passing cars by posing in the middle of the street. I don’t think this is legal. [...]
